Because I tend toward a conversation, I learned the “law of the hole” at a pretty young age. Here it is: When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging!

Words are powerful and vital. And with that, they must be respected and handled “wisely.” Most often, particularly when there’s a misunderstanding, a few well-spoken words have more healing merit than a strand of big and eloquent “fluffy’s.”

A good friend of mine told me of an incident where he and some of his relatives suffered a misunderstanding during one of their family vacations. In the hotel they were staying, some famous guest booked some suites. Though their accommodations were private, somebody in his party recognized one of the celebrities. After a few autographs acquired and admirations were exchanged, his kinfolks went their way pretty pumped.

However, hotel security approached them and sharply warned against such behavior for the duration of their stay. Pretty cut and dried, right? Not so for one of the “more vocal” members. By the time it was all said and done, this individual had all but gotten the whole lot of them kicked out of the hotel. He simply did not know how to shut his trap!

If you are like me, and love to talk, that’s alright. Just ask the Lord to help you know when, and when not, to exercise that special gift. Makes no difference who you are in this life, you will run upon an unfair situation every now and again.

And this is when a wise tongue and an even disposition pays huge dividends.
