September 8 – Wax On, Wax Off

Prize Wisdom highly and exalt her, and she will exalt and promote you; she will bring you to honor when you embrace her. She shall give to your head a wreath of gracefulness; a crown of beauty and glory will she deliver to you. Proverbs 4:8-9

The following comments are from the movie The Karate Kid :
Miyagi: First, wash all car. Then wax. Wax on…
Daniel: Hey, why do I have to…?
Miyagi: Ah ah! Remember deal! No questions!
Daniel: Yeah, but…
Miyagi: Hai!
[makes circular gestures with each hand]
Miyagi: Wax on, right hand. Wax off, left hand. Wax on, wax off. Breathe in through nose, out the mouth. Wax on, wax off. Don’t forget to breathe, very important.
[walks away, still making circular motions with hands]
Miyagi: Wax on, wax off. Wax on, wax off.

To date, this is one of my favorite movies, simply because wisdom promoting dialog like the “wax on, wax off.” Daniel wanted to learn how to do karate so he could defend himself, but Mr. Miyagi knew if he could condition the head and heart of Daniel with depth of character, the rest would take care of itself.

The acronym I’m using these days for wisdom is:

What
I
See
During
Oscillating
Moments

Life consists of revolving moments. And if we are willing, the repetition will develop “muscle memory” of the qualities we want to keep. But it doesn’t come from reading it or trying it out a time or two.

Like, “wax on, wax off,” something is happening deep within your soul as you “oscillate” around the proverbial promises Daddy God has provided. And that kind of wisdom will come in handy just when you need it.
